To get your online store recommended by ChatGPT and other AI assistants, make your product and category pages easy for AI to read and trust (clear specs, real prices and stock, plain policies, reviews, FAQ, structured data, crawler access), earn mentions on sites AI already trusts, and then track AI-referred visitors as their own segment so you can convert them with the right follow-up.
What is "ChatGPT shopping", and why does it matter now?
More and more shoppers skip the search results page and ask an AI assistant instead: "Which espresso machine under 30 million tomans is easiest to clean?" or "Compare these three running shoes for flat feet." The assistant asks follow-up questions, reads product pages across the web, and returns a shortlist with reasons and links.
OpenAI made this official in November 2025 with shopping research in ChatGPT: a mode that asks clarifying questions about budget and needs, researches price, availability, reviews, and specs across the internet, and produces a personalized buyer's guide with links to retailers. OpenAI says it reads product pages directly, cites sources, avoids low-quality or spammy sites, and offers merchants an allowlisting process. Gemini, Perplexity, and Copilot offer similar experiences.
Two facts make this urgent before the holiday season:
- AI-referred visitors arrive further down the funnel. Consulting and analytics studies in 2025–2026 (for example L.E.K. Consulting) found that shoppers coming from AI assistants have often already compared options and arrive ready to validate and buy.
- The shortlist is short. A search results page shows ten links; an AI answer often names three to five products. If you're not in it, you don't exist for that shopper.
How do shoppers phrase questions to AI versus a search engine?
AI prompts are longer, more specific, and full of constraints. That changes what your pages need to answer.
| Search engine query | AI assistant prompt |
|---|---|
| buy espresso machine | Which espresso machine under 30 million tomans is easiest to clean for a beginner? |
| running shoes flat feet | Compare Brand A and Brand B running shoes for flat feet and daily 5 km runs |
| گوشی میانرده | بهترین گوشی زیر ۲۰ میلیون برای عکاسی شب که باتریاش دو روز دوام بیاورد چیست؟ |
| baby stroller | Lightweight stroller that folds with one hand, fits a small car trunk, okay on rough sidewalks |
| کرم ضدآفتاب | ضدآفتاب بیرنگ برای پوست چرب که جوش نزند و زیر آرایش خوب بنشیند |
Notice the pattern: budget, use case, constraints, and trade-offs. Pages that state these things plainly are the ones AI can quote.
What decides which stores an AI assistant recommends?
No vendor publishes an exact formula, but OpenAI's own description and GEO research point to the same signals:
| Signal | What it means for your store |
|---|---|
| Crawl access | AI search crawlers must be allowed to fetch your pages |
| Complete product data | Specs, dimensions, materials, compatibility, in plain text, not only in images |
| Accurate price and availability | Stale or hidden prices make you less useful to cite |
| Clear policies | Shipping, returns, warranty written in one findable place |
| Reviews and ratings | Real customer feedback AI can summarize |
| Third-party mentions | Comparison sites, reviews, forums, and articles that name your store |
| Answer-shaped content | Buying guides and FAQs that answer constraint questions directly |
| Consistency | Same product names, prices, and details everywhere you appear |
7 steps to make your store AI-recommendable
- Check crawler access. In
robots.txt, allow OpenAI's search crawlerOAI-SearchBotif you want to appear in ChatGPT search answers. It's separate fromGPTBot, which relates to model training; you can allow one and block the other. Check the equivalent settings for other assistants, and make sure your firewall or CDN isn't silently blocking them. - Complete your product pages in text. Every spec a shopper might filter on (size, weight, material, compatibility, what's in the box) should be written on the page, not only shown in a photo.
- Add structured data. Use schema.org
ProductandOffer(price, currency, availability), plusAggregateRatingfor genuine reviews andFAQPagewhere you have real Q&A. It helps machines read your page without guessing. - Write category buying guides that answer constraint questions. "How to choose a stroller for small apartments and rough sidewalks" matches how people now ask. Start with a one-line answer, then a comparison table, then details.
- Make policies unambiguous. A single, clear page for shipping times by city, return conditions, and warranty. AI assistants and shoppers both look for it.
- Earn mentions where AI looks. In Iran that includes price-comparison sites like Torob and Emalls, review blogs, and niche forums. Keep your listings accurate and your store name consistent.
- Keep prices and stock fresh. Out-of-date prices or "available" items that are actually sold out get you dropped from answers and hurt trust when shoppers arrive.
How do you know AI is sending you traffic?
ChatGPT automatically adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to links in its answers, and other assistants show up as referrers such as perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, or copilot.microsoft.com. Two practical tips:
- In analytics tools, this traffic often lands in "Referral" or "Unassigned" because there's no
utm_medium. Create a custom "AI assistants" channel that matches these sources. - Capture it on your own side too, so you can act on it, not just report on it (see the next section).
How do you convert AI-referred visitors with Leadara?
Seeing the traffic is step one. The real value is treating these visitors differently, because they arrive with a specific need already in mind.
- Send a dedicated event. When a landing URL contains
utm_source=chatgpt.comor the referrer is a known AI assistant, send a custom event such asai_referral_landedthrough the Leadara SDK or REST API, with the source and landing page as properties. - Build an "arrived from AI" segment. Use the "did something" filter on
ai_referral_landedto group these visitors, and combine it with other conditions such as "no purchase yet". - Capture contact details at the right moment. Show a popup on the landing pages AI sends people to (for example, "get the full comparison and price alerts by SMS"), or a spin-to-win wheel gated on a phone number. Submissions flow into the audience.
- Run a tailored welcome journey. These visitors came for a specific product decision, so the first message should help them finish it: a short comparison, stock status, or delivery time, not a generic brand intro.
- Recover hesitation with behavior-based journeys. Leadara's browse-abandonment and abandoned-cart templates work for these visitors too; exit on
purchase_completedso buyers stop getting reminders. - Offer live chat on AI landing pages. Visitors arriving with detailed questions often have one last one. Proactive live chat triggers on those pages, with a journey on
chat.closedto follow up if they didn't buy. - Compare conversion in funnels. Build a funnel from
ai_referral_landedtopurchase_completedand compare it with your other sources. That tells you whether AI visibility work is paying off.
Common mistakes
- Blocking all AI crawlers by default and then wondering why you never appear in answers.
- Hiding specs and prices in images or behind "call for price".
- Writing buying guides full of fluff instead of direct answers and tables.
- Letting comparison-site listings go stale with old prices or dead links.
- Treating AI traffic as an analytics curiosity instead of a segment with its own journey.
FAQ
Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT shopping results?
OpenAI says shopping research results are organic and based on publicly available retail sites. Merchants can follow OpenAI's allowlisting process to make sure they're eligible to appear, but that isn't paid placement.
What's the difference between OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot?
OAI-SearchBot is used for surfacing sites in ChatGPT's search features. GPTBot relates to training OpenAI's models. They're controlled separately in robots.txt, so you can allow search visibility without allowing training.
Does this matter for Iranian online stores?
Yes. Iranian shoppers increasingly ask AI assistants product questions in Persian, and the same principles apply: clear Persian product data, honest prices, and a presence on comparison sites the assistants can read.
How is this different from regular SEO?
It builds on SEO (crawlability, good content, structured data) but rewards direct answers, complete specs, comparison tables, and third-party mentions more heavily, because the AI is assembling a shortlist rather than ranking ten links. This is what GEO (generative engine optimization) is about.
How quickly will I see AI traffic after these changes?
There's no fixed timeline. Crawling, indexing, and being cited take time, and results vary by category. Start tracking now so you have a baseline to compare against.
What should the first message to an AI-referred visitor say?
Something that helps them finish the decision they came with: a quick comparison, stock and delivery info, or an answer to a common question about that product. Save the brand story for later.
