Exit conditions decoupled from conversion goal: leave early on any segment/event vs only when the goal metric fires

شرایط Exit جدا از هدف تبدیل: خروج زودهنگام با هر سگمنت/رویداد در برابر خروج فقط وقتی متریک Goal می‌زند

Decoupled exit conditions end the trip on their own segment or event rules; the conversion goal can be a different clock for reporting—edit both when either changes, because changing the goal does not silently rewrite exits.

Are journey exits the same thing as the conversion goal?

Operators often assume “the goal is purchase, so exit = purchase.” That is one valid design—not the only one.

  • Conversion / goal metric: what you count as success for the journey (purchase, trial activated, form completed). Used for reporting and sometimes for unenroll-on-goal.
  • Exit conditions: rules that remove someone from the trip early (entered VIP, unsubscribed, matched “do not disturb,” opened a parallel winback, etc.).

Decoupled exits mean those early-leave rules are authored separately from the goal. If you later change the goal from “any purchase” to “purchase > 2M تومان,” exits do not auto-update unless you edit them too. Goal reporting and early-leave logic can diverge on purpose.

This builds on exit on conversion vs global exit criteria and timing nuances in exit deferred until after wait vs immediate. Goal-vs-send counting is in goal unenroll without send vs conversion requires email.

Why decoupling helps Iranian cart and nurture teams

Cart journey example:

  • Goal: completed order (for revenue reporting).
  • Extra exits: entered “VIP wholesale,” opened “damage claim” segment, or hard unsubscribe.

You still want goal=purchase for dashboards, but you also want people who joined wholesale VIP to leave the B2C discount cart path immediately—even if they have not purchased in that journey yet.

Onboarding example:

  • Goal: workspace activated.
  • Exit: converted to paid (even if activation event is messy), or moved to enterprise onboarding segment.

If exits were hard-wired 1:1 to the old goal label, every goal rename would silently change who leaves—and support would not know why.

Truthful Leadara mapping

With Leadara journeys, segments, events, and email/SMS:

  • document global-style exit criteria separately from what you call the conversion/goal for reporting;
  • stop SMS/email when exit matches—do not assume a goal rename rewrites exits;
  • for cart, keep purchase as goal and add explicit exits for VIP / unsubscribe / parallel journey membership;
  • QA both “goal fired” and “exit-only fired” profiles.

When to keep exits tied to the goal

Multiple success definitionsGoal for reporting + richer exit set

Practical steps

  1. In the brief, two lines: “Goal = …” and “Exit also on …”.
  2. List every early-leave segment/event.
  3. When changing the goal, open the exit list in the same change.
  4. QA: profile hits goal only; profile hits VIP exit only; profile hits neither.
  5. Tell support which door they left through (goal vs exit) if your logs expose it.
  6. Keep quiet hours out of this discussion—they are not exits.
  7. Review monthly: orphan exits that still mention retired segments.

Common mistakes

  • assuming goal rename updates exits;
  • using a soft vanity goal as the only way out;
  • forgetting unsubscribe as an exit on SMS-heavy paths;
  • mixing deferred-wait exit timing with “which rule fires”;
  • no QA for exit-only profiles.

FAQ

Are journey exit criteria the same as the conversion goal?

Not necessarily. Goal is success reporting (and sometimes unenroll-on-goal). Exits can be additional early-leave rules.

If I change the conversion goal, do exit conditions update automatically?

Do not assume yes. In decoupled designs you must edit exits yourself when the business rule changes.

Can exit use a different event than the goal?

Yes—that is the point of decoupling (e.g. goal=purchase, exit=VIP enter).

Should unsubscribe be a goal?

Usually no. Unsubscribe is an exit (stop messaging), not a success metric.

How does this relate to exit-on-conversion?

Exit-on-conversion is one pattern where leaving ties to the success event. Decoupling adds exits beyond that event.

Does Leadara Live Chat manage exits?

No. Live Chat is human support. Exit configuration is in your journey design. AI Chat is internal only.

What about wait timing?

Whether exit applies mid-wait is a separate timing question—see the deferred-vs-immediate article.

PM one-liner?

“Goal and exit are two fields: changing one never silently changes the other unless we edit both.”

Next step

Open your highest-volume journey. Write Goal and Exit as two bullet lists. If they are identical, say so on purpose. If VIP/unsubscribe should eject people, add them as exits and QA an exit-only profile this week.
